Our laboratory is interested in examining the molecular mechanisms underlying opioid dependence and the intersection with pain mechanisms.
In addition, our recent findings indicate the presence of glutamate receptors in epidermal keratinocytes. Interestingly, our data highlight a possible role for these receptors in the mechanisms underlying itch signaling between the epidermis and primary afferents.
Current studies in our laboratory are focused in elucidating the cellular mechanisms underlying the function of keratinocytes and their impact in primary sensory neurons in itch conditions. To this end, we employ a combination of molecular, cellular and state-of-art imaging and optogenetic approaches.
